LOOKING OVER THE FOUR YEARS
Dear
Chatham County Citizen:
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Chatham
County for permitting me to sever as commissioner from 2002 thru
2006. It was my
pleasure being the chairman my last two years serving as a
commissioner.
The
success and accomplishments while serving was due to the great board
members I served with, Senator Bob Atwater, Margaret Pollard, Mike
Cross, Patrick Barnes, Carl Outz and Tommy Emerson.
Nothing
could have been accomplished without a wonderful county staff.
Chatham
County has just 6.7 employees per 1,000 residents...only 25% of the
counties have a smaller ratio. An employee made a statement saying I
often pushed the staff, I rather think I challenged them and they
met and exceeded the challenge every time. Thanks to each of you for
your hard work for the citizens of Chatham County.
Three
statements made to me over the four years stuck with me and I will
never forget them:
- Talk
is cheap!
This is so true. If you only talk about something and not
take action to get it done all of us would fall in this
category. The only time I fell in this web was because how slow
government works. I cannot be blamed for not getting things done
that were possible being a commissioner. Yes, if reelected I
would have tried to help get other important items completed,
but I was not.
- I
like what you do but do not like the way you do it.
This statement refers to my failure to inform my fellow
commissioners of the research and preparation on projects and
ideas. Staff or myself would have worked many hours on certain
projects and foolishly I expected others to know what had been
done. A good example was I worked for over two years on getting
an easement to our commerce park others worked for six years. I
apologize to all for this action. Many more projects could have
been successful if I had handled them correctly.
- When I started to work for Chatham County I did not like you.
When an employee told me this I asked why.
They told me they formed this opinion because of what
they read in the newspaper. It is no doubt I caused controversy
from the time I filed to run for commissioner. The media made
the best of it mostly writing only the negative, but I will
admit I stirred it up. I apologize for my causing negative media
comments about our county. On the good side the employee
finished their statement by saying “but once I knew you better
and saw you work I appreciate all you do for Chatham County,
thanks.”
Please
visit my “Issues Web Page” to view some of the other
achievements made over the last four years. Again thanks for
permitting me to serve as a Chatham County Commissioner.
